Masoor Dal Red Lentils

I wanted to create a Dal that had my own flair to it.  Also I find it's the best way to learn, by experimenting.

Here's what I came up with!

1 cup dried red lentils

1 brown onion

1 tsp oil

1 1/2 cup water

1 tin pureed tomatoes

3 green cardamom pods

1/2 tsp kashmiri chilli

1 tsp tumeric

1 tsp fennel

1 tsp Garam Masala

2 tsp crushed garlic

1 tsp crushed ginger

Place lentils in water to soak for 2 minutes.  Rinse twice and set aside.

Dice onion and saute in frying pan.  Once browned reduce heat to low, add oil, tumeric, garam masala, garlic, ginger and chilli.  Bruise cardamom pods and add to frying pan.  Fry for 1-2 minutes stirring constantly.  Add tomatoes.  Simmer for 5 minutes on medium heat.

Place all ingredients into slow cooker including fennel.  Cook on high for 4-5 hours.  Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Serve with yogurt, on rice, and or with bread.
